Shellhaven Farm Helpful Hints Disclaimer: These are some of the horse care practices we employ at Shellhaven farm. Please always consult with your veterinarian and/or farrier before utilizing these practices in your own horse care regime, as they may be contra- indicated by your veterinarian and/or farrier. Thrush: At Shellhaven, we use a few drops of Lysol Concentrate (it must be concentrate) on thrush-infected areas of the hoof. It is effective, inexpensive and non-staining. For particularly bad cases of thrush, we clean the area thoroughly with a hoof pick and hoof brush, apply a few drops of Lysol Concentrate to the infected area, then use a hoof pick with a piece of cotton on it to further clean the area. After discarding the dirty cotton ball and immediately applying another dose of Lysol Concentrate, we then pack the area with a piece of cotton. After repeating this process once a day for 4-5 days, the thrush infection typically is no longer present.

Grain Storage: Looking for ways to use an old freezer? Why not use it for grain storage. The freezer is an ideal place to store grain - it is air tight (helps protect against mildew and mold caused by humidity), rodent-proof (obvious bonus) and has a large storage capacity.

Tips on Memorizing Dressage Tests: -set up a mini-dressage arena at home complete with letters and practice walking, trotting and cantering through your test. Your family may think you are crazy (!) but do it anyway. You may be providing them with some much needed entertainment. -either the night before or the morning of your test, find the arena you are supposed to be riding in and mentally run through your test in the arena. Know where in that arena you are supposed to be which direction you will be facing for each movement. -immediately before getting on your horse to warm-up, go through your test. -start memorizing your tests at least 1 month ahead of show time. You can start memorizing by drawing an arena with letters and drawing the test pattern in that arena. Or better yet buy a dry erase arena to drill your test
